As a child, I used to enjoy spring by scouring the neighborhood for blooming lilac, together with my best friend. We were lilac thieves…

Only public places though, which happened to have an abundance. Every year we noticed more spots, adding on to our yearly expedition. We used to manage with bare hands, no tools, but a lot of laughter and determination. At the end of the day, I showed up at home hiding behind armfuls of lilac. My mother scolded and smiled, scolded and smiled. I was very quiet. Eventually she’d start praising the beauty of the flowers and go looking for vases.

It's a cold, rainy spring in Toronto this year, but the lilac is in bloom, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
